Past Global Action Weeks

Every year in April, the Global Campaign for Education holds Global Action Week (GAW) to draw attention to the millions of children, youth and adults who cannot realize their human right to receive a quality education. Here is a list of recent Global Action Week campaigns.

  • About Global Action Week

  • 2009 - The BIG READ

    In 2009, 15,000 Canadians joined 14 million students, teachers and activists read from the BIG READ book, a collection of stories about literacy and learning. 

     

  • 2008 - The Worlds' Biggest Lesson

    Students around the world set a Guiness World Record for the World's Biggest Lesson to raise awareness about the need for Education for All.

  • 2007 - The World's Longest Chain

    In 2007, people around the world formed the"World's Longest Chain"to send a message to world leaders about the importance education rights - a 'chain' to bring attention to the realities of education for disadvantaged peoples and what violations there are to education as a human right.

  • 2006 - Every Child Needs a Teacher

    Children, parents and teachers in 120 countries held mock court hearings, taught lessons, marched streets, painted pictures, made posters, met officials, voted for teachers and added their voice to the campaign.

  • 2005 - Send My Friend to School

    Over five million people in more than 115 countries produced three and a half million messages cut-out figures representing children out of school. They wrote messages on these"friends" asking world leaders to provide education to the 100 million children who were out of school.

  • 2004 - Worlds' Biggest Lobby

    The"World's Biggest Lobby"mobilized over 2 million people to press politicians to provide an education to every child during Global Action Week.
